Art and Design and Technology
The teaching and learning of Art and D&T are covered by all Year Groups at Falconer’s Hill Academy. Pupils need to be aware of not only traditional artists and techniques, but are given an opportunity to explore and experience modern art and art making techniques. Experiences in Art and D&T should promote in pupils an appreciation of all styles and materials, not only in their own country but in the context of the wider world and how these have changed and developed over the course of time. These experiences should enhance children’s potential to become effective, creative, considerate and valuing participants in society and promote continuing study and interests for life.
ICT continues to change the lives of everyone. In the future our pupils will be required to participate in a rapidly-changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology. It is therefore vital that, through our teaching, we enable them to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information, whilst at the same time guiding them to be able to use this information in a discriminating and effective way.
We believe that every child has a natural love for music and that this should be embraced from an early age by providing our children with the skills to explore a lifelong journey with music. The school is committed to embracing the children’s natural love of music.
PSHE provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
RE at Falconer's Hill will be provided in line with the legal requirements. These are that: the basic curriculum will include provision for Religious Education for all pupils on the school roll; the content of RE shall reflect the fact that religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religious traditions represented in Great Britain; the RE which is provided shall be in accordance with the locally Agreed Syllabus for Northamptonshire (SACRE 2011-2016).
“Science stimulates and excites pupils’ curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It also satisfies this curiosity with knowledge. Because science links direct practical experience with ideas, it can engage learners at many levels. Scientific method is about developing and evaluating explanations through experimental evidence and modelling. This is a spur to critical and creative thought. Through science, pupils understand how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change – impacting on industry, business and medicine and improving quality of life. Pupils recognise the cultural significance of science and trace its worldwide development. They learn to question and discuss science-based issues that may affect their own lives, the direction of society and the future of the world.” (National Curriculum)
As children grow older they are subject to a range of attitudes, varying information and myths about sexuality and relationships. Some of this may not be accurate or helpful.
The school is in a position to provide accurate input through a positive sex education curriculum and to deal with children’s questions in an open, frank and sensitive way appropriate to their age and understanding.
David Ross Education Trust and British Values:
The Trust is very supportive of the ethos of promoting British Values, and preparing our pupils for success in a modern Britain. A heavy reliance is placed upon broadening horizons for each and every child and this includes developing the core skills of tolerance, respect, teamwork, resilience and building self esteem. These are all values and qualities that we feel are relevant in order to play a full and meaningful role in society, and are promoted via our extensive house system that lends itself to cultural and sporting competition, democratic principles, social mixing, the development of greater pastoral care and enhanced PSHE.
