Curriculum

At Falconer's Hill we follow the National Curriculum in all subjects. To download our Curriculum planning for this academic year please download the documents on the left-hand side of the page.

English (Literacy)

We believe that knowledge, understanding and the successful application of the English language is a fundamental life skill; it develops children’s ability to communicate their experiences, desires and knowledge effectively and successfully. Throughout our school, we aim to nurture and develop independent readers and writers through purposeful, engaging and developmental lessons which link to our rich and stimulating creative curriculum work.

During our Talk for Writing lessons, we support our children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively, as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama; as well as non-fiction and media texts.

Our children also gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins and use their knowledge, skills and understanding across a range of different situations.

Here at Falconer's Hill Academy we are committed to ensuring that all children develop the ability to communicate fluently and effectively. We do this by delivering a designated English lesson a day in addition to Read Write Inc lessons. Read Write Inc is designed to support early readers with phonic development and initial reading skills such as blending and comprehension.

The daily talk for writing lessons are linked to the current national curriculum objectives. The units of work begin with a cold write which is an independent piece of writing to assess previous understanding and knowledge. The children then repeat this task at the end of the unit as a hot write. This showcases the progress and learning that have taken place across the unit.

Falconer's Hill Academy follow the Read Write Inc spelling programme to ensure that our children become competent and confident spellers building on prior knowledge of spelling rules. We also encourage and teach cursive handwriting throughout the school from early years to year 6.

Maths

The teaching of maths is planned carefully to meet the needs of every child at Falconer's Hill Academy. Effective Maths is used to support children to progress quickly and develop a mastery understanding of mathematical process.

Planning is based on the new national curriculum standards and used to facilitate high quality teaching and learning.

Furthermore, where possible, we believe that maths should be taught in context. We particularly value the importance of children understanding the reason why their mathematical learning will be relevant to them in the real world and demonstrate a clear purpose for learning mathematical skills.

Art and Design and Technology

The teaching and learning of Art and D&T are covered by all Year Groups at Falconer’s Hill Academy. Pupils need to be aware of not only traditional artists and techniques, but are given an opportunity to explore and experience modern art and art making techniques. Experiences in Art and D&T should promote in pupils an appreciation of all styles and materials, not only in their own country but in the context of the wider world and how these have changed and developed over the course of time. These experiences should enhance children’s potential to become effective, creative, considerate and valuing participants in society and promote continuing study and interests for life.

I.C.T

ICT continues to change the lives of everyone. In the future our pupils will be required to participate in a rapidly-changing world where work and leisure activities are increasingly transformed by technology. It is therefore vital that, through our teaching, we enable them to find, explore, analyse, exchange and present information, whilst at the same time guiding them to be able to use this information in a discriminating and effective way.

Music

We believe that every child has a natural love for music and that this should be embraced from an early age by providing our children with the skills to explore a lifelong journey with music. The school is committed to embracing the children’s natural love of music.

PSHE

PSHE provides pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of our school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

R.E

RE at Falconer's Hill will be provided in line with the legal requirements. These are that:  the basic curriculum will include provision for Religious Education for all pupils on the school roll; the content of RE shall reflect the fact that religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teaching and practices of the other principal religious traditions represented in Great Britain; the RE which is provided shall be in accordance with the locally Agreed Syllabus for Northamptonshire (SACRE 2011-2016).

Science

“Science stimulates and excites pupils’ curiosity about phenomena and events in the world around them. It also satisfies this curiosity with knowledge. Because science links direct practical experience with ideas, it can engage learners at many levels. Scientific method is about developing and evaluating explanations through experimental evidence and modelling. This is a spur to critical and creative thought. Through science, pupils understand how major scientific ideas contribute to technological change – impacting on industry, business and medicine and improving quality of life. Pupils recognise the cultural significance of science and trace its worldwide development. They learn to question and discuss science-based issues that may affect their own lives, the direction of society and the future of the world.” (National Curriculum)

Sex Education

As children grow older they are subject to a range of attitudes, varying information and myths about sexuality and relationships. Some of this may not be accurate or helpful.

The school is in a position to provide accurate input through a positive sex education curriculum and to deal with children’s questions in an open, frank and sensitive way appropriate to their age and understanding.

David Ross Education Trust and British Values:

The Trust is very supportive of the ethos of promoting British Values, and preparing our pupils for success in a modern Britain. A heavy reliance is placed upon broadening horizons for each and every child and this includes developing the core skills of tolerance, respect, teamwork, resilience and building self esteem. These are all values and qualities that we feel are relevant in order to play a full and meaningful role in society, and are promoted via our extensive house system that lends itself to cultural and sporting competition, democratic principles, social mixing, the development of greater pastoral care and enhanced PSHE.
